CLIMATE CHANGE AND RURAL WORKERS THERMAL COMFORT: HISTORICAL AND FUTURE IMPACTS REA
Amaro,André L. N.; Yanagi Junior,Tadayuki; Yanagi,Sílvia de N. M.; Ferraz,Gabriel A. E S.; Campos,Alessandro T..
Abstract The aim of the present research was to propose a bioclimatic mapping to classify the thermal comfort and discomfort of rural workers within the state of Minas Gerais, considering historical and future scenarios. Monthly historical series (1976-2014) of minimum, mean and maximum temperature-humidity index (THI), determined through the values of air temperature (minimum, mean and maximum) and relative humidity from 48 weather stations located in the state of Minas Gerais were used to analyze the trends through Mann-Kendall and linear regression assays. The bioclimatic mapping of human comfort, obtained via geostatistical analysis, was developed as a function of the minimum, medium and maximum THI for the historical period (1976-2014) and future...

Data mining to estimate broiler mortality when exposed to heat wave Scientia Agricola
Vale,Marcos Martinez; Moura,Daniella Jorge de; Nääs,Irenilza de Alencar; Oliveira,Stanley Robson de Medeiros; Rodrigues,Luiz Henrique Antunes.
Heat waves usually result in losses of animal production since they are exposed to thermal stress inducing an increase in mortality and consequent economical losses. Animal science and meteorological databases from the last years contain enough data in the poultry production business to allow the modeling of mortality losses due to heat wave incidence. This research analyzes a database of broiler production associated to climatic data, using data mining techniques such as attribute selection and data classification (decision tree) to model the impact of heat wave incidence on broiler mortality. The temperature and humidity index (THI) was used for screening environmental data. The data mining techniques allowed the development of three comprehensible...

Influence of Water Temperature and Heat Stress on Drinking Water Intake in Dairy Cows Chilean J. Agric. Res.
González Pereyra,Ana Valeria; Maldonado May,Verónica; Catracchia,Carlos Guillermo; Herrero,María Alejandra; Flores,Myriam Celina; Mazzini,Mariana.
Grazing animals are exposed to heat stress and there should be conditions to facilitate water intake. Three experiments were carried out to determine the relationship between water intake, water temperature, and heat stress for Holstein pastured dairy cows. Experiment 1: Drinking behavior of 13 cows was evaluated (for 3 consecutive days) and four time periods were established according to the temperature humidity index (THI): (H1:05:00 to 10:59 h, H2:11:00 to 16:59 h, H3:17:00 to 22:59 h, and H4:23:00 to 04:59 h). The highest mean percentage of drinking bouts (53.2%) was registered in H2 (THI: 74.91 to 83.95). Drinking bout means among time periods were different (p < 0.05), thus showing that heat stress conditions influence drinking behavior....

Potential summer heat-stress of sheep at Greek husbandry areas of different landscape CIGR Journal
Panagakis, Panagiotis.
During the last years and due to its economic importance sheep farming expands at flat land areas in Greece exhibiting less favourable climatic conditions especially during summer. It is therefore justifiable to assess the potential summer heat-stress of sheep growing at areas of different landscape. Potential heat-stress of sheep during summer was studied at three Greek husbandry areas of different landscape, namely Larissa - flat land, Ioannina - semi-mountainous and Trikala Korinthias - mountainous. Indices used were the night hours during which ambient temperature was below 21ºC, the Temperature Humidity Index (THI), the time percentage (%) within predefined heat-stress categories and the THI-hrs index. Overall, the area of Larissa exhibited the worst...
